Living the San Francisco Dream

SFFD on land and on sea

Physically, San Francisco is a small city, roughly 49 square miles in size, with over 864,000 residents packed into its confines. The density, steep hills, heavily trafficked streets and numerous high rise buildings create challenges for many, including the San Francisco Fire Department.

SFFD boat

In addition to services on land and at the San Francisco International Airport, two fireboats stand at the ready to provide aid in emergencies on and near the water. The boat pictured here, the Guardian, is the oldest of the 2, built in 1950 and still going strong.

The San Francisco Fire Department - another reason to be glad we live in this City.

Lottie Kendall - It's interesting that the SFFD also using boats to fight fires.  It makes sense fighting fires is so much more than just fire trucks these days!

Lottie, you captured a great shot of the fire vessel. The police and fire have their work cut out for them ... that is for sure.

Lottie Firemen do a lot more than just put out fires.  Firemen do not have an easy job and deserve our respect.

Hi Dorie Dillard - we're grateful for our fire fighters, often the first responders

Hello Laura Allen, Lake Tahoe - Truckee Real Estate for Sale - this fireboat might look like something from a children's book, but the work it does is real.

Good morning, Noah Seidenberg - you keep educating me on Evanston and Chicago, and I'll share San Francisco - deal?

Grant Schneider - indeed, a huge shout out today and every day for our first responders.

Hi Will Hamm and Kathleen Daniels -  I'm glad you enjoyed the fire boat pic - I was in the right spot at the right time that morning!

Good morning, Lou Ludwig - doesn't this boat look like something from a children's book? Classic, indeed, but quite the workhorse.

Hi George Souto - indeed, firefighters are often the first responders in all sorts of moments of need. I have nothing but respect for them and the job they do.

The Guardian is a beautiful fireboat. San Francisco can feel proud of their Fire Department. It's such a unique and charming city! I also like San Mateo a lot too!

Hi Patricia Feager - the SFFD does an amazing job (including standing by to rescue my granddaughter when the elevator stuck with her iniside!)

Thanks for sharing this interesting information.

Have an outstanding week.

864,000 does not seem small somehow when a person lives in a rural state when 50,000 is a city, and most towns are a couple hundred but around 5000 as a rule for population. Thanks for sharing as Roy Kelley reminds Lottie Kendall !

Just another interesting thing to photograph while out on a walk, Roy Kelley

Hi Andrew Mooers - physically San Francisco is small, roughly 7 miles x 7 miles. Population wise is is the 4th largest city in California (after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose.) No matter, it's #1 in my book.
