Living the San Francisco Dream

San Francisco's Beach Chalet

Tucked into the very western edge of Golden Gate Park, you'll find the Beach Chalet, and it's sister bistro, The Park Chalet.

Housed in an historic building on Ocean Avenue, not far from the famous Cliff House, The Beach Chalet is a treat for brunch, lunch, or dinner. Located upstairs in the building, the sweeping view of Ocean Beach and the Pacific Ocean is the big draw. Dine with friends while watching beach activity during the day, as we did today with a family group. Or, be mesmerized by the sun, setting into the ocean in the evening.

Make sure to allow time to enjoy the murals painted on all four walls downstairs, and the highly-detailed tile work. These murals, depicting San Francisco life, date back to the 1930's WPA program, a depression-era government jobs program from which we're still benefiting today. Over each of four doorways is a stanza from a poem about San Francisco, one of which is shown below.

Hi Ronald DiLalla - the location and view is great -- and the food is good, too

Sharon Lee - the murals were painted by one artist, a French muralist in the early 1930's. Definitely a talented man.
