Living the San Francisco Dream

My new dream house would have .....

Buying a brand new home and being able to choose features, finishes and how to use extra spaces is a dream of many people. This month, Beazer Homes and ActiveRain have joined forces to ask us what we'd like in our new dream home. Read the post, then join in the fun and share your ideas.

As our life styles change, our ideas for a dream home change too. When I downsized to a condominium in the city, I still had dream home wishes, but instead of a bigger kitchen and more rooms, I was looking for features like:

  • single-level living
  • a view - whether ocean, mountain, valley or city lights -- give me something good on which to gaze
  • a bathroom with a shower with no curb - walk/wheel right in -- it looks sleek and is very practical
  • flexible space - an alcove that could be home office, or library, or showcase for treasured items
  • garage parking with ease of entry and exit - no backing out onto busy city streets!
  • gas range in the kitchen
  • a small deck or patio
  • shared common amenities like a pool, or a roof deck

Last night I attended the grand opening event at a new condo building at 1645 Pacific Street in San Francisco. This elegant building incorporates many of the features on my dream list, including the one feature I think every builder of new homes should incorporate - the curbless shower -- I love that sleek, clean look.

1645 Pacific Street, San Francisco

Good morning Lottie... Thanks for sharing.  Debbie and I have our dream home list as well but know in reality there is no perfect place.  Think we'll stay put until we move to the nursing home :)

So true, John. One never would find every wished for feature in any home, something I constantly remind my clients, no matter what the price range. Still, it's fun to dream!

Lottie, Those are all great features. A curb-less shower - that builder understands what buyers want!

Kathleen, if you get some time off, I'll take you to look at these beautiful condos.

Lottie, you are so right! As our lives change so do our ideas about the perfect home. I'm leaning towards one floor and all the bells and whistles LOL. Some day we will make that move!

Hi Janice -- as we change, our dream home ideas change, too.

Our homes certainly need to fit our life stage, and yes, those wants and needs change as we move through the cycle of life.  You make some excellent points.

Lottie - Great suggestions for a new home to last through our retirement years!

I've seen some wonderful new places lately -- not every feature I like the best in any one place, but that's always the way, right Norma and Laura?

Hi Judi - we know handy things when we see them, right?

Lou, I'd love to bring a buyer to 1645 Pacific - beautiful condo units in a great neighborhood.

Your description of a dream home looks good to me. I also like the looks of the new condo building. Go for it!

Posted by Roy Kelley (Realty Group Referrals) about 5 years ago

Hi Roy -- I'm staying put, but if I were a buyer today I'd definitely check out 1645 Pacific Street.

Hi Lottie,

Wow, I love that building and it would be my dream house too. I am sure I could never afford to buy one there but it is fun to dream. Your features are perfect.

Kristin, I can't afford to live in the penthouse, which I really love, either. But if one is going to dream, dream big, I say!

Lottie, your dream home sounds very much like what many of my buyers are looking for in Missouri. Now that you have found a builder who has the same vision, maybe he will be able help you find the location that will fit your budget.

Posted by Anna Hatridge, Missouri Realtor with Goodson Realty (Goodson Realty) about 5 years ago

Hi Anna, my dream house isn't too diferent from many people's vision. In our area it's hard to find an interesting, small house due to the high cost of land. And condos with a view of San Francisco Bay, in a fun neighborhood, are expensive, too. Really, there's no such thing as a perfect home; we'll stay put in ours, but I'd love to help today's buyers find their spot.

Those are all excellent features, and while our home is hardly new, it has quite a few of them!

Posted by Ron Marshall, Birdhouse Builder Extraordinaire (Marshall Enterprises) about 5 years ago

Ron, after watching a number of people age or deal with various infirmities, I'm especially taken with showers that have no lip to them -- and they look great, too.

Hi Lottie: You are absolutely correct. Our priorities and preferences shift as dictated by the change in our lifestyle. Your dream home does look sleek. Sleek is simple but sophisticated.
