Living the San Francisco Dream

Bougainvillea in San Francisco?

On recent walks through various neighborhoods in San Francisco I was awed by brilliant bougainvillea blooming in profusion. The first picture is of a house in the Sea Cliff neighborhood. The next two shots are in Pacific Heights.

One tends to think of bougainvillea as a semi-tropical vine, more suited to warmer climes like San Diego, but they obviously flourish in San Francisco too. As you explore the City, you'll be surprised with what you find. (Did you know we also have flocks of wild parrots? More about that later.)

Lottie~ Sea Cliff neighborhood and Pacific Heights are the perfect place to call home. Great pictures, the colors of the Bougainvillea are simply amazing & BTW: in the Long Beach area, we also has a flock of wild parrots....

Lottie, I did not know about the wild parrots!  I would love to see them. I love birds! I imagine the bougainvillea do well in San Francisco because of all the moisture from the ocean.  But, what do I know?  I know more about parrots than plants!

Hi Lottie: These flowers are bountiful in my country. They laced the houses in your pictures beautifully.

Jon, that's cool you have parrots in Long Beach; bougainvillea, too, I'm certain!

OK, Kathleen, one of these days we'll take a City hike together and search out the parrots!

Hi Maria - many people don't think of bougainvillea when they think San Francisco. I imagine your hometown was bedecked with their color. Beautiful!

Laura, the bougainvillea was in-your-face beautiful--I had to stop walking and take these pictures.

Hello Joe -- I love bright, bold colors -- maybe that's the reason I'm attracted to the bougainvillea.

Good evening Lottie. I was very impressed with the San Francisco when I was there last year. Sadly, I did not have a long time to stay visit. The flowers are beautiful.
