Off-leash dog parks in San Francisco

As I write this in January, much of the country is freezing (literally) and certainly not thinking about off-leash dog parks, but in San Francisco the story is quite different. Off-leash dog parks are enjoyed year round in San Francisco.

At last count, the City of San Francisco has 28 off-leash dog areas, where well-behaved pooches can romp and play with others. These are scattered throughout the various neighborhoods in San Francisco.

Of course, there are some rules to be followed, including:

  • Dogs must be controlled to avoid destructive behavior and excessive barking
  • Vaccinations and licenses must be current (a license is required for every dog over 4 months of age)
  • Pick up and remove dog waste
  • Do not leave your pet unattended
  • Dog walker are welcomed, and asked to limit the number of dogs they bring to 6
  • Leash your dog(s) in on-leash areas

To learn more about some of the specific parks in San Francisco with off-leash dog areas, check out the Dog Play Area Program of the City of San Francisco.

Living in San Francisco - fun year round for 4-legged friends as well as 2-legged ones! Is it time for you to live your San Francisco dream?

Great share, Lottie. Off-leash dog parks are an important asset to any neighborhood. Glad to hear you have many options to offer to clients looking to relocate to an area that is pet-friendly!

Lottie, this is great info for pet lovers in the San Fran area - an off leash park is a great way to socialize dogs, and as an added bonus, they're usually worn out enough after all the running around to be well behaved later in the day (aka sleeping!)

Good afternoon, Lottie. Off leash parks are becoming more popular. Nice to see that your area has so many.

Hi David, at first one might think San Francisco wouldn't be a great spot for a dog, but it's wonderful-lots of parks, pet-friendly stores, etc.

John, I'm always struck at how happy the dogs look, and how much fun they have socializing with other dogs.

Michael, San Francisco has lots of great dog parks.

Lottie, I love your picture and the information you've shared!  It's encouraging to hear about so many dog lovers.  I haven't met a healthy dog yet that didn't appreciate a great run, even in San Francisco.

Rebecca, that is my granddaughter's dog - I think it's a cute picture. He, like all the dogs seem to, loves heading to the park for a good romp.

Good morning Lottie. What a great photo. In this rural part of CT, where we live, no parls needed.

Hi Joe - dog parks are often found in our suburban towns in the Bay Area, but none like these in San Francisco. What strikes me is how happy the dogs are, playing with one another -- they remind me of how little kids act they are at a playground!
