Living the San Francisco Dream

San Francisco's Exploratorium - the fun doesn't stop when you leave

San Francisco's Exploratorium is high on the 'must visit' list for Bay Area residents and out-of-area visitors alike. But, did you know you can take some of the fun, hands-on learning experiences home with you?

Beginning the Solar Puppy project

One Christmas gift our 12 year old granddaughter received was RobotiKits' 6-in-1 solar powered projects. New Year's Eve was just the right time to tackle the first project: Solar Puppy!

RobotiKits solar powered projects

Since our engineers were working at night, when they had the puppy (named Caroline, by the way) completed, they substituted a bright incandescent light for the sun. What happened? Take a look at the video to find out.

Often I am annoyed by stores at museums, not liking the way an exhibit ends inside the gift shop. It's different at the Exploratorium--you need to seek out the store, just to the right of the entrance doors. When you next visit the Exploratorium, or are walking along The Embarcadero, stop in and take a look at the wide variety of toys, books, kits, etc. Great gift ideas for birthday or holidays.

Wishing you fun with your own RoboPuppy, or whatever tickles your fancy and sparks your enthusiasm.

--- Come for a visit; Stay for a lifetime!

It is so wonderful when you can visit a hands on learning center and purchase something to take home that allows the learning to continue.

Lottie, what fun... Caroline seems to be chasing her tail. I've had days like that . Happy New Year!

We went there a number of years ago when with our two nieces. They loved it and so did we. Hadn't remembered until reading your post.

Laura, too many distractions on Christmas Day to sit and put together kits, but with just the 3 of us together on New Year's Eve, the timing was right.

Rebecca, all 3 of us had a lot of fun building, and watching the solar powered puppy come together. Plan a day to come enjoy the city; much to do, and maybe we could fit in coffee or lunch. I'd like that!

Judi, I can't remember how old your youngest granddaughter is, but I can picture the two of you working on these together.

Nancy, isn't that the truth?? LOL! More tail chasing in store for us in 2014 I'm sure!

Joe, you probably visited the Exploratorium in it's old digs at the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts. Last year it relocated to new, enlarged space along the Embarcadero near Pier 39. Even more great hands-on exhibits to enjoy now.
