Living the San Francisco Dream

Shop Local, Get Healthy?

Shop Local, Get Healthy?

I hit upon a great way to double-task and enjoyed every minute of it, not something you'll hear this non-shopper say very often.

This Christmas I had some very specific gift requests I wanted to fill for our 2 "Adopt-a-Family" groups, so Saturday afternoon off I went.

  • First stop: Academy of Sciences at Golden Gate Park for 2 gift memberships (I ended up with one for myself, too )
  • Then off to get some gift cards from the recipients' preferred grocery stores, Safeway and Smart & Final
  • Next, a visit to Clement Street in search of a gift card to one of the Vietnamese Restaurants located there

Walk and shop map

Shopping accomplished, I continued walking, enjoying the tendrils of fog weaving their way through blue, sunny skies as I walked through the neighborhoods and shopping districts of Laurel Heights, Presidio Heights, Pacific Heights.

Fillmore Street

A 4-mile walk home, plus a 1-mile walk from the bus I chose to take earlier made for a healthy way to shop local.

Living in San Francisco is conducive to walking--great neighborhood shopping districts near single-family houses and condominiums, beautiful vistas and weather we can enjoy year round. This is a lifestyle that's easy to enjoy.

--- Come for a visit; Stay for a lifetime!

Hi Carol - glad to hear you enjoyed your San Francisco trip, and the NAR convention. I went to some good sessions.

You are so good and disciplined Lottie, I wish my knees would allow me to walk as much.

My discipline is non-existent, Roger, I enjoy walking and exploring the City. My knees hurt if I don't exercise.

Lottie, a four mile walk in your City requires HUGE hills, and that must have felt really good.    Accomplishing some Holiday shopping sounds like a WIN WIN!

Lottie, The more I visit my son in the City (he lives in Pacific Heights) the more I embrace the whole walking thing. It truly is a lifestyle and one you really enjoy.  All that walking keeps one fit.  So generous of you to adopt a family and give to others.  That is just the kind of person you are. I really appreciate and enjoy that about you!!!

Lottie - One of the things that I loved when I spent some time in San Francisco years ago was how walking and mass-transit friendly the city is.  You live in a wonderful place! I hope buyers and sellers appreciate just how well you know the area and neighborhoods in the San Francisco area!

Lottie - I love your idea and your post too! We all need to walk more and shop locally. Thanks for the motivation.

Joan, this particular route avoided most of the steep hills. It can be done!

Kathleen, thanks! We have a date for coffee sometime soon when you're visiting your son.

Laura, I think we're pretty fortunate to live here, too. So much to enjoy.

Patricia, our weather and small physical size makes walking while shopping a natural fit.

I love it that you were able to combine walking and shopping locally.  I do both, but usually not at the same time.

Norma, walking while running errands or shopping is a way of life in the city (and one of the reasons I enjoy this lifestyle so much.)
