San Francisco's Speed Limit near schools

15 miles per hour speed limit in SFIn 2011, San Francisco became the first large city in California to reduce driving speed to 15 miles per hour when children are prsent in school zones.

Signs are up at 181 locations reminding drivers, and the SFPD is committed to enforcing this limit, making San Francisco more friendly than ever to foot traffic.

School is back in session, and when I see the many children walking to school in the morning, laughing, skipping, calling out to friends, clutching papers in hands, I'm glad for the heightened awareness this low speed brings.

Let's keep our children and ourselves safe.

Remember, 15 miles per hour in school zones in San Francisco when children are present.

This is a forward thinking idea. Hopefully other communities will take note.  25 mph is way to fast.

Lottie - With so many distractions these days for us, it's a great safety step to slow the speed down to 15 miles per hour in a school zone.  Great information and reminder for everyone to slow down near schools!

Hi Tim, Jane, and Laura - I'm glad you approve the lower speed limit. It makes sense to me, and the low speed for a block or two delays drivers what, 5 or 10 seconds? It's worth it.
