Living the San Francisco Dream

Getting to Know The Mechanics Institute, San Francisco CA

Get Acquainted with The Mechanics Institute in San Francisco CA
The Mechanics Institute, Post Street, SF
When I was a child, I would occasionally accompany my father on errands to San Francisco, and became acquainted with The Mechanics Institute, of which he was a member. My earliest memory of The Mechanics Institute is that I discovered I could shuffle my feet along the opague glass floors between stacks of books, and then shock myself by touching the brass handrail. I thought that was quite fun. Later, when I was in high school, it was the only library anywhere that I knew of open on Sunday (great for research for school papers due the following day!)

Fast forward 50+ years -- I've re-discovered it and it is even more appealing than it was then. Located at 57 Post Street, in the heart of the financial district, the Mechanics Institute Library and Chess Room is an historic membership library, cultural event center, and chess club. Membership is open to all. Founded in 1854 to serve the vocational needs of out-of-work gold miners, the Institute today is a favorite of avid readers, writers, downtown employees, students, film lovers, chess players, and the 21st century nomadic worker who needs a quiet place to plug in a laptop and do research. The Mechanics Institute might be just the place for my next off-site business planning day!

Barbara, if you ever stop working long enough for a vacation, I suggest you come to San Francisco. I have a feeling you'd find much to your liking here, and would write up some interesting blog posts!

Lottie - I used to drive into the bay area on many weekends when I lived in Sacramento.  I never knew about this or many of the things you share with us.  Amazing how much culture there is in the bay

Hello Nevin - I probably would have walked right by The Mechanics Institute if I hadn't recognized it from my childhood trips. We walk by it on our way home from the Commonwealth Club programs, another institution I'll write about by and by!

Walking by The Mechanic's Institute brought back a flood of memories. My brother remembers it, too, but has entirely different memories. Interesting!
