Living the San Francisco Dream

Who Let the Dogs Out!

Who Let The Dogs Out!

S
an Francisco is a city that loves its pets! Yes, we love the Giants, too, and some of you will remember that song being played at AT&T Park many a time. But today, I'm talking about pets, dogs in particular.

According to the 2000 and 2005 census figures, there are about 120,000 dogs in the city and only 108,00-113,000 children! Some dogs are owned by retired folks, but not all.

And that's where Who Let the Dogs Out comes into play. All those dogs need to be cared for while owners are at work. If you Google "dog wakers San Francisco," you'll find 10 pages of dog walking services. The one most visible to me, in my neighborhood, is Who Let the Dogs Out. I get a kick out of walking into one of the many neighborhood parks and seeing the red trucks parked nearby, knowing I'll encounter a walker with, perhaps 5-8 dogs on leashes, all happy looking and having the time of their lives.

So, if you thought you couldn't be part of the vibrant San Francisco scene and bring along your beloved pet, think again. San Francisco loves its pets!

City living, at its best! Are you ready to find your spot?

Do they love their taxes too, I hear they have one of the highest in the nation. Before you know it, they may start taxing each dog.

What a great name for a dog walking biz!  Great localism post.

Hi Winston -- you're right--taxes are high in San Francisco; so is the minimum wage (highest in the nation); so are our housing prices and our payrolls. When San Francisco is right for someone, it's really right!

Thanks, Anna. I have to laugh whenever I see the Who Let the Dogs Out! vans. Perfect name.

Lottie, what a great idea with a twist on dog walking.  I love the name of the business and the vans! Very clever!

Morning Lottie I do like the name and I bet they do get a lot of business but the poor walkers struggling with all those smiling faces has got to be a choir

Clever names for businesses are big in my book Lottie, this is excellent, I love it.  One beauty salon I owned was called "The Permanent Solution"....................

Lottie, that's so funny! Love your post. Now when I see the van, I'm going to think of you, silly fun.

Sharon, it's a great name, isn't it? And a very popular service.

Good morning James - the amazing thing to me is that the dogs seem to get along so well and are very well behaved. I couldn't handle them, but I'm not a dog owner. They're fun to watch.

Roger, I've often thought that hair salons and coin-op laundries have the most clever names. Love "The Permanent Solution."

Silly fun, indeed, Elisa.

Lottie - You're right San Francisco does love their dogs.  How much fun it must be to see 5, 6, 7 dogs all together having a great time while their owners are at work!

Lottie, I particularly like this post because in your comment with your entries you described yourself as currently not having pets in your life.  This is great because you've just shown that even non pet owners can be aware of the services available in their neighborhood.  Just great.

Kathleen, I'm rapidly becoming a dog lover since moving to SF! I'm glad your son and Molly have found their spot here.

Hi Captain Wayne and Laura -- I saw them out again today, in the Presidio -- 8 happy dogs on leashes; one happy dog walker. It makes me smile.

Mona, I'm enjoying my life of comparative ease, being responsible and accountable to no one once my work day ends. I must say, though, that I'm getting to really like all the dogs I see around town. Today's sighting of a dog walker in the Presidio make me smille--everyone (dogs and human) looked so calm and content.
