Why Living in the San Francisco area is so great - Reason #8 -- Zipcars!

zip car in an SF lotI first learned about Zipcars when my daughter lived in Boston.
Now I see them heading up and down the freeway between San Francisco and San Jose.

zip car-Wheels When you Want ThemThis is a great concept for urban dwellers who might not own a car. If you are walking, biking, riding a bus or taxi every day, your need for a car could be minimal. But what about the times when you truly need a car? To fill that void, in steps Zipcars and its local cousin, City Car Share.

Located throughout San Francisco, this is a movement that has been embraced by the city and here to stay, as was recently acknowledged when San Francisco won Zipcar's Future Metropolis Award, a prize based on the 'sustainability, innovation, vibrancy, efficiency, and livability' of the top 36 most populated cities in the United States.

Lottie:

Very interesting post. I did not know about Zip cars but this makes perfect sense.

Lottie - gee, I never even heard the term. What does it mean? How does it work?

I had not heard of ZIP Cars before, but sounds like a good concept for congested areas.

Hi Alan -- it makes great sense for urban areas. When our second car bites the dust, we'll stop paying the $275 parking fee, and put that money toward a Zipcar membership--and save the insurance, maintenance, license fee, as well as the initial purchase outlay!

Hi Larry and Sheila -- I think Zipcars is an idea whose time has come. I believe a good percentage of us urban dwellers could wean ourselves away from owning autos, or at least owning multiple autos.
