Living the San Francisco Dream

Drought time in California-what can we do?

We sensed this was coming, was just around the corner, but now it's official: California is in a state of drought. The headlines hit us on just about a daily basis:

"California Drought: 17 Communities Could Run Out of Water" proclaimed the San Jose Mercury

"California Drought: meager snowpack sets record" the San Francisco Chronicle tells us.

And direct from the Governor's office, "Governor Brown Declares Drought State of Emergency"

Finally, on January 30 we expected our first rain "storm" for the month. How did we do?

"Bay Area Weather: when it rains it sprinkles" SF Gate tells us downtown San Francisco received .003" of precipitation; Mt. Diablo received the most -- .018"

Let it rain shirtWhat can we do, other than a rain dance? The first step is awareness. The second is accepting that drought is real in California, and be willing to make some life-style changes so we use less water.

Living in an apartment or condominium means taking small steps. We can:

  • Put water in the basin when washing one's face or scrubbing vegetables
  • Not let the water run while brushing teeth
  • Flush toilets only when necessary
  • Take shorter showers
  • Take fewer baths, and don't fill up the tub when we bathe

Being aware of our water use habits helps me find ways to conserve that aren't onerous.

Share your ideas how condo owners and apartment dwellers can use less water, won't you?

--- Come for a visit; Stay for a lifetime!
