Today I've been feeling especially thankful to be living in a City that has heart, a City full of people ready to be a positive force of good.
I've written before about the yoga sessions that are offered, on a donation basis, at Grace Cathedral almost every Tuesday evening. These are attended by 500-600 people each week (no typo, five hundred to six hundred people). Donations are requested from those who can, and those who can't are welcomed just as warmly.
Last week many of these weekly participants came together for a special fund-raiser, Yoga for Change SF. Candle light Yoga was taught by 3 instructors for 1-1/2 hours, with all proceeds going to fund scholarship at the Grace Cathedral community pre-school.
This pre-school is a year-round program for 3-4 year olds in the community. It brings together children of all socio-economic groups, all races, speaking various languages at home. 1/3 of the children pay full tuition (and it's not cheap!!); 1/3 receive full scholarships and 1/3 pay 30%-70% tuition on a sliding scale based on ability to pay.
The full scholarships are reserved for children from disadvantaged neighborhoods like The Tenderloin, one of the poorest city neighborhoods that is just a few blocks down from the top of Nob Hill where Grace Cathedral and top hotels are located.
All the children benefit from this amazing preschool at a time when learning is critical to a child's success.
This yoga community--most of whom are in their 30s I'd guess (some in their 20s; other older. Some, like me, ancient) raised over $30,000 for the benefit of the Grace Cathedral pre-school!
If you find yourself worrying about the generation of Millennials, thinking they are lazy and self-centered, think again. Sure, they might seem dingy with their constant texting, eating out instead of cooking at home, spending money on Uber instead of the bus, but like the majority of others here in San Francisco, they have heart and happily take steps to improve our city, for which I am truly thankful.
