Yes, friends, Sunday May 17, 2015 San Francisco will turn into a huge moving party with the annual Bay to Breakers Run starting at 8:00 AM.
The 12K foot race (and I use that term loosely) known as the Bay to Breakers has been an annual event since 1912, and gets zanier by the year. With more than 50,000 participants and well over 100,000 spectators, one can barely shuffle along until well after the Hayes Street Hill and Alamo Park. It's not until one enters Golden Gate Park that the crowds thin out enough to run, and then it's an ego run on a slight downhill grade to the Great Highway along the ocean.
Of course, with the fun and silliness and great numbers of people involved, streets across town are closed for the morning and a good part of the day.
My advice: if you're not taking part in the Bay to Breakers this year, don't attempt to cross town! For those of us living north of the Civic Center - head north across the Golden Gate bridge, or to Crissy Field and the Presidio. For those south of Market Street and Golden Gate Park, enjoy the quieter spots like Lake Merced, Buena Vista Park or the beaches and park lands of San Mateo County.
However, you spend tomorrow, enjoy the spirit of the day!
